Thoughts
The core kit, the DCK387D1M1 brushless hammer drill, impact driver, and LED flashlight kit, appears to be new to market and is priced at $279 at Home Depot.
One online retailer claims it to be $399 with an MSRP of over $800, which is utter BS.
So let’s figure $279 as the regular price. For an extra $100, you get Dewalt’s premium 20V Max circular saw (not the new brushless saw) and reciprocating saw.
There’s a *kind of similar* impact driver and compact drill kit, bundled with (2) 2.0Ah battery packs – DCK283D2 – which is currently priced at $234 via Amazon. It was $260 when we bought one for a giveaway winner back in early March.
For $279, the “core” promo kit comes with a few upgrades – a compact hammer drill instead of the non-hammer drill, a higher capacity battery pack (which you’ll want if using heavier duty tools such as saws), and an LED flashlight.
With this in mind, I think the core of the promo bundle is a good price. $100 for 2 premium cordless saws? That’s definitely a good deal.
$379 seems like a high price, until you look at the regular combo kits and what you get.
A standard 5-tool Dewalt combo kit is $429, and a combo kit with premium saws is $550 after seasonal $20 off $100+ discount. The drill in both kits is a premium brushed motor hammer drill, and the impact driver is Dewalt’s original. The batteries are 3.0Ah.
There’s a new brushless combo kit, DCK483D2, $379 via Amazon after Father’s Day $20 off coupon. This kit gives you the latest brushless circular saw, but no recipricating saw, and compact battery packs.
There’s a brushless drill and impact driver combo kit for $283 after $20 seasonal discount. The “core” promo kit from the Home Depot Deal of the Day bundle gives you a higher capacity battery pack, a more featured impact driver, and the next generation compact hammer drill (vs. last generation non-hammer drill). Plus there’s the LED flashlight.
Long story short, if you’re looking to buy into Dewalt’s 20V Max cordless power tool lineup, and don’t mind having a hammer drill (you can ignore the hammer drill mode if you don’t need it), and don’t need brushless saws, this is a VERY GOOD deal.
I’d even go so far to call it a FANTASTIC DEAL. If I bought this kit, I’d look towards buying more compact battery packs. I’d keep the higher capacity pack for the saws or other power-hungry tools I’d buy later on, and want at least one more compact pack so that I could have at least 2 of the other tools (drill, impact driver, flashlight) able to work back and forth without having to swap packs around.
A 2-pack of 2.0Ah batteries is currently $86 via Amazon.
