Meet the new Dewalt DCD777 cordless brushless drill, which will be coming out in Fall 2016, just before the holiday season. It will be available as part of a 2-battery kit (DCD777C2), and a drill and impact driver combo kit (DCK277C2).
I suspect we’ll soon see this model everywhere, potentially at the $129 price point, maybe even less. I’ve seen one listing with a $149 price, which might be the off-season price for the kit, and so $129 during the holiday season, maybe $119, isn’t too far of a stretch.
This will be a budget-friendly model, or at least that’s my take on it, and here’s why. Compared to Dewalt’s latest and greatest DCD791 compact brushless drill ($189 via Amazon), which we named the best compact cordless drill this year, it is:
- Less powerful
- Longer chuck (plastic?), at least it looks to be longer
- Lower speeds
- No base-mounted LED worklight
- Lower capacity 20V Max battery packs
But, it’s still a Dewalt drill. Here are some features & specs:
- 300 UWO (unit watts out)
- 0-450, 0-1500 RPM
- 1/2″ ratcheting chuck
- LED worklight (under the chuck)
- Kit comes with (2) Li-ion battery packs, charger, and carrying bag
Dewalt’s DCD771 cordless drill has been hugely popular in past years’ holiday shopping seasons, and remains quite popular. It’s been sold in huge quantities as a drill/driver kit, as part of a drill and impact driver combo, and as part of larger cordless power tool combos.
The new DCD777 seems to match up well with the 20V Max DCD771, in terms of power and motor speeds, and so the brushless motor should allow for far longer runtime.

But, compared to the DCD771, the new Dewalt 20V Max DCD777 looks much more compact, nearly as compact as their “regular” models. A lot of professionals have bought and used the DCD771, but I’m of the believe that the other models, DCD780, DCD790, DCD791, are more aimed towards professionals and industrial users as everyday compact cordless drills.
I’m quite surprised that Dewalt would seek to come out with a new lower priced 20V Max brushless drill, but it makes great sense. Maybe they’re seeing the market saturated with DCD771 sales, maybe not. It’s unclear whether the two drills, one with a brushed motor, the new one being brushless, will be sold alongside each other.
I’m not sure Dewalt will be selling the DCD777 at the DCD771’s holiday season price point of $99 – that seems like too great a feat. Maybe if they bundled it with just 1 battery pack instead of 2, but that’s not how they’ve been doing things.
I wouldn’t be too eager to go out and buy this kit for $149. For just a little more money you could buy the DCD791D2 kit or previous generation DCD790D2. This drills have better specs (more power, faster speeds), probably pricier chucks, and they are also kitted with higher capacity battery packs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the DCD777C2 kit came bundled with a slower charger.
But if Dewalt manages to sell this for $129 during the holiday season, or maybe even $119, they’ll likely push a lot of sales. $99 is the better target, but I don’t quite see that happening, except maybe as a Black Friday or Thanksgiving Weekend sale.
Heck, if this kit was $99, even I would have a hard time keeping my wallet in my pocket.

As of the time of this posting, Amazon’s prices are $237 for the drill kit, and $229 for the Dewalt DCK277C2 drill and impact driver combo kit. Both prices seem to be bogus to me. As mentioned, $149 seems to be the everyday price of the drill kit, and I believe the holiday pricing will be less. As for the combo, I don’t quite trust the $229 price, but don’t dare to guess otherwise.
The impact driver in the combo kit is a new model too – DCF787, which I’ll post about once I learn more.
